Companies that spam or sell your address!

Postby SysKoll » Sat Nov 01, 2003 1:32 am

This topic is meant to list companies that have leaked or sold SG addresses. If you've got a spam sent to one of your SG addresses, please post the details here:

* Name of company that spammed (only if you are POSITIVE, e.g. the SG address was SlimyCorp.20.username and was given only to SlimyCorp)
* Type of spam (porn, mortgage, 419, etc.)

Hickory Farm

User emeleel reports he was spammed on an address given only to Hickory Farms. A pox on their house.

Orbitz leaked customers' email addresses

Postby SysKoll » Sat Nov 01, 2003 3:27 am

There are spammers. There are people who sell your address to spammers. And then there is a third category: people who involuntary leak your email address to spammers. Orbitz just joined this category. At least they are not clueless about it, they do keep their customers informed (see http://bbs.spamgourmet.com/viewtopic.php?t=82
). Nevertheless, if you gave them an SG address , you might soon have to shut it off and change your Orbitz profile's email address to something new. I suggest orbitz-com.dontleakthisone.YouUserName@sg...

Orbitz seems to have been doing their homework as far as server security goes. Maybe it was an inside job.

On the other hand, I am a bit disappointed in some well-known companies that put their customer list on an IIS server. IIS is
so easy to hack that it really drives down the prices per million stolen address. Have mercy for the poor stolen address vendors, man, get yourself a safer server!

Thanks for the info. Are you sure that you didn't post messages on their forums (e.g. colorgenics) using the disposable?

For example, I posted a message on the MIT Technology Review forum using the disposable I gave to this magazine and I got spammed. Not by the magazine publishers themselves but by spammers who had harvested my address on their forum web pages.

So please tell us if you posted.

isabellacam.com

Postby Guest » Sun Nov 09, 2003 11:48 pm

Company: isabellacam.com
Spam type: porn, 1-3 times a day

Unique address only supplied to the site to sign up and handle billing or emails directly to the site operator. Never posted in any public location, nor used for any form of web board - signup and emails to the site only. Was a nice porn site, someone in the 3d world misused my credit card (completely unconnected to this site) and it was cancelled to stop further fraudulent use. Shortly after that I started receiving the spams. I chose not to sign up again with the replacement card, since I don't believe in supporting those who spam. Cost the site it's monthly revenue from me. No spam until after the end of the subscription. California based.

Got a new one with a twist this morning.

http://www.thesavingsregister.com

Not at all surprising that these people sold it however - this is one of those companies that you're constantly seeing with the "Free this" and "Free that" for signing up, taking a survey, whatever. Then you get spammed to death by the hundreds. (Literally, there are thousands of deleted messages in my log here.)

However, this morning I got a spam that has added to the name I originally gave them. Instead of "companyname.20" etc., it was sent to "com,companyname.20" etc. Which means it created a whole new address to get 20 messages to without me doing a bloomin' thing!

There were a handful of other SG addys in the header list, I bet they've all been subjected to the same thing.

SysKoll,

I've just created an account - I am the "guest" above who reported Colorgenics and Memolink. I'm certain I gave the addresses only to the two sites.

Since my post in November the counts have grown to:

Memolink.com - 978 deleted
Colorgenics.com - 368 deleted

They're constantly on my "last 3" list with from names like "artulrjkvmvruyk@zmbsamtwv.blmngp.com." Constant reminder of why this service is so awesome.

Staples

Postby WhiteSpyder » Wed Mar 03, 2004 4:22 pm

If you want a mail-in rebate from Staples, don't give 'em your email. You'll get a couple useful emails, then a bunch of ads and crap.

www.scriptlance.com

Postby kyricc » Thu Mar 04, 2004 10:45 am

This has been a while back (6 months?) but the smarmy bastards sold/leaked my SG addy for them. I started receiving spam from a company called supercgiscripts.com. Interestingly enough at least the spam was targeted (CGI scripting services spam from an email addy used at another CGI scripting site) but annoying still.

I confronted the site owner about it. He quickly accused me of using the address more than just at his site. I explained SG to him and the fact that I use targetd email addresses, one address to a site. I gave him the SG URL. I never heard from him again, however, 3 days after the last comminucation I stopped receiving the wanted emails (exclusive sender) and lo and behold I was no longer able to login to the site.

The spam stopped as well about 5 days after that. I can only assume that maybe he didn't actually 'sell' my address but was the administer of a group of sites (scriptlance.com, supercgiscripts.com, etc.) and decided he could get more exposure of he used the user base from one to send targeted UCE from the others.

I'm very glad that you were able to stop the sneaky spammer! Yet another reason to use one disposable addresse for each site or person.

The French online bookstore Chapitre.com mercilessly spams you and refuses to honor your unsubscribe requests. DON'T ORDER ANYTHING FROM THEM.

Clueless bastards.

before SpamGourmet

Postby Not NextDayPC » Thu Apr 08, 2004 9:36 am

Before SpamGourmet I gave out target-e-mail-addy@mydomain.com. A year after I ordered from NextDayPC that address started getting spam like crazy (10 per day) on that address. Either they sold it, or had a inside job, or a server security problem. Either way, beware.

Before SpamGourmet I gave out target-e-mail-addy@mydomain.com. A year or two after I registered TaxCut (from H&R Block) that address started getting spam. First it was Lowe's Home Improvement, but now other people are getting into the act. Needless to say, complaints fall on deaf ears.

800flowers.com

Postby theq » Tue Apr 27, 2004 6:43 pm

800flowers.com was given a unique tagged address for a flower order, never used for any other purpose.

A couple months and legitimate emails later, there have been 50+ spams sent, from viagra to refi spams. I actually called them up, but they were utterly clueless. They have an "affiliate" program that is likely the source of the problem.

Buyer beware!
