Spamgourmet server downtime?

Postby gourmet » Wed Jul 13, 2011 10:44 am

I just noticed that SG was down about 12 hours. Does this happen often? And what was the reason for outage? Network issues, crashed server, hardware issues, virtualization platform issues or so?

Doesn't seem to be isolated incident: ... 07c2d56ad1

I also noticed it was down. I had only 3 remaining messages on an address I was getting multiple car quotes at, and needed to re-set it to 20 messages before I went to bed, and could not get on the site to do that for a couple of hours, then gave up and went to sleep. It would be good if we could increase the maximum number to 30 or 40 to avoid this. Even if the site doesn't go down, it would be helpful to have 30 or 40.

I think most of us would only use it 10 to 20% of the time so it would not add a lot of forwarding to the server. Or I'd gladly pay an extra fee of $20 a year to get a higher limit. I can think of several cases where it's handy. In my current situation, I signed up at a car site to get quotes from 5 dealers. The car site first sent me a general reply plus 5 emails with the names of the vendors. The vendors then each sent an automated reply within 1 hour acknowledging they got my request and would work on it asap. Then 3 of them sent an email asking me things like what extra features I might want.

Then they all sent a quote, and 3 of them sent emails stating the pluses of going with them such as free inspections, car washes when serviced and what not. That's 22 legit non-spam emails in less than a day. Most people don't want to have to log in and update their message allotments within 24 hours, and in some cases we're at work, or in the hospital, or having a really busy day and aren't able to. Even an increase to 30 would be a help.

Another thing that sometimes happens is that the SG email is shared with a few places (like above), and 1 of them blasts a lot of emails out and wipes out half of the allotment before I can get in there and reset it. If the limit is 30, that gives us more ability to deal with a situation of 1 rogue emailer within a group. We can still get done what we need to get done, then let the address expire and protect ourselves from the ongoing spam from the rogue.
