Spam forwarded from hidden address?

Postby user32 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 1:20 am

I'm receiving e-mail sent to addresses I've hidden. There are no exclusive senders associated with the hidden addresses. The only thing I can think of is that the spammer is using "neverbox" in the from section.

Also, e-mails I put in "trusted" are no longer being recognized as such. Because I lump all of my mailing list mail under a few addresses, this means that I have to re-up the count on them every day or risk missing some. The "trusted" address list was a very handy feature, is it going to be turned back on soon?

trusted or exclusive?

Check again for email sent after today - we fixed a problem related to reply-to addresses that may have had some larger effects.

With regard to the hidden addresses - are the messages coming To: them, or From: them?

None of these addresses have exclusive senders assigned. For my mailing lists, I added the senders' addresses to the trusted list. When this started, I first checked to make sure the sending addresses hadn't changed and then I turned off the "reply address masking" feature just to make sure. I'll reset the counts today and see what happens tomorrow.

With regard to the hidden addresses, here is the header of one of the forwarded messages I received today, with my info written over:

that one just looks like someone sent spam to an unexpired disposable address (that happened to be hidden) - but am I missing something? Hiding addresses from the list doesn't deactivate them - it just makes it so you can't see them. You can "zero" them out if you want them to stop working prior to their natural terminations

The FAQ compared hiding an address to deleting it so I assumed that it deactivated it. My bad for misinterpreting, then.

I see the issue -- once they run out people sometimes want to delete them so they don't have to look at them anymore, but the problem is that if you deleted them, they'd re-appear (with a full set of messages) when the next message came in, just like they did when they were new -- for that reason, hiding them is like what people think deleting them would be like after they run out of messages.

I've always understood that hiding doesn't remove an address completely, but I did incorrectly assume it deactivated it. (Although, I admit don't understand what the big deal is about deleting addresses. So an address would reappear with full count when used again. I'd "risk" that to remove addresses I haven't received anything from in a long time and don't expect to receive mail from again.)

Today I checked and SG is still increasing the counts for mail sent by my trusted senders.

I don't understand why a deleted address would re-appear when the next message came in.

Surely, if the address is deleted there is no address to re-activate!
