This won't protect your real address from spammers who already have it, but it will prevent you from having to give out your real address yet again, which makes things worse. Possibly over time, the spam will decrease to the account if you stop giving it out (and possibly gravity will reverse itself, too... :) ).

I have a school address that I used on Usenet a lot (and filled in forms with, and signed guestbooks with) in the early nineties. It now has a terminal case of AIKS (Address Is Known to Spammers) - and, alas, probably won't recover. I've spent a lot of time on remedial treatments, such as filtering -- these help some, and there are moments of hope. When you look at the big picture, though, these efforts are just delaying the inevitable.
