Gmail is requiring SMTP authorization for the "send mail as" (Use Gmail to send from your other email addresses) function. In the past gmail just sent a ownership conformation email to the new address.

Add another email address you own
Configure your mail to be sent through spamgourmet.com SMTP servers
:asks for SMTP Server
:asks for username
:asks for password

port options are: 587, 25, 465
TLS, SSL

Authentication failed. Please check your username/password.
[Server response: DNS Error: Address resolution of smtp.spamgourmet.com. failed: Domain name not found code(0) ]

Is there a work around or solution?

At the moment, you can use Gmail itself as the MSA. Crazy. See http://webapps.stackexchange.com/a/72975.
