Cannot send mail from Spamgourmet (error 255)

Postby BirrerEd » Wed Oct 06, 2004 11:34 am

Hello to everybody and especially to the admins of the Spamgourmet servers

I really appreciate the services of Spamgourmet. I receive lots of e-mails via Spamgourmet without problems. The "send e-mail from Spamgourmet"-service however I do not use very often. I used to work, but the last few times (last few months) when I tried it, it did not work. I suspected a problem with the spam-scanner in our company (because of the long - and suspicious-looking - address) and therefore asked our support to help.

We used an address at asecus for testing (I do not write the address here, you will understand from below) and Spamgourmet gave me the following address to use:
+order+BirrerEd+4aa59c0071.cschroeter#a ... ourmet.com
It should appear to come from order.e.birrered (at) spamgourmet (as you can see).

Our support told me that the e-mail has been sent, as they could see from the log (I replaced my real e-mail-address and our domain, it's now somewhere.com):

But then I received an error message (error 255) from Spamgourmet:
Code: Select all

And what the support said:
If the message was sent out ok the problem is not with the Mxtreme. I researched the error 255 and found that it is an unknown error. You will need to communicate with the administrator of the gourmet.spamgourmet.com mail server.

That's what I'm doing now: Has anybody ths same problem? Any idea what could help?

Thanks a lot!

Did you check the mailbox to which the BirrerEd sg account forwards its emails? Do you see anything at all in this mailbox?

For what it's worth, I just tested the 'send from' function and it workds for me.

Yes, received the "Delivery failure report"

Postby BirrerEd » Thu Oct 07, 2004 1:39 pm

As I wrote (see second "code" block), I - means the e-mail-address where spamgourmet forwards to - received a "Delivery failure report" with the not sent message attached.

Maybe there is something in the log messages and mail headers that gives a hint why the error occurred? Because it seems that the e-mail has left our server and the spamgourmet server did not accept it and sent the error back.

If somebody could look into this, I would be very thankful!

Are you by any chance using Exchange Server for your email....?

I have this little bell ringing in my head that is reminding me that exchange doesnt seem to like the '#' characters in an email address. At least some versions of exchange...

I had a problem sending a mail with a # in the address some time back and it was exchange related.

Probably completely off-track....
