Setting Up New Domains - Revisited

Postby pprotus » Tue Aug 06, 2013 8:17 pm

In the FAQ, it asks that users notify SG in advance, if one plans to point an idle domain name at SG...so that the domain name can be used for disposable addresses. I'm thinking of pointing daioni.com or darkstone.com (or both) at SG by editing the MX records to send all email to gourmet@spamgourmet.com. Is this the right thing to do? Is this a good place to notify SG?

I found some prior discussion on this issue: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1384&p=6617&hilit=mx+records&sid=9305ce8f6ee4e709ca799f8102c72f35#p6617

But frankly, that thread confused me more than helped.

Thanks much!

yes - it's the right thing to do to set up the MX record to point to gourmet.spamgourmet.com - you only need one. If you're required to have two, then you could do a second one pointing to gourmet7.spamgourmet.com

The problem in that thread is that there was more than one MX record, and only one of them was pointed at spamgourmet - the other one was pointed somewhere else. When a mail server is trying to deliver a message, it looks up the mail host via MX record and then just picks one of them (or the DNS server that is fulfilling the request just picks one of them) arbitrarily, and the message could wind up in either place. Because of this, it's important that there be only one MX record, of if there's more than one, that all of them point to spamgourmet.

Also, we do have to know about it so that we can update the local config to accept mail for the domain.

Ah. I understand. Thank you very much. I'll be pointing "darkstone.com" at spamgourmet, as recommended. Best Regards, pprotus.

Hello. Need to ask for help/advice again. Clearly I am doing something wrong. :-)

When I send a simulated spam email to myself at a darkstone.com disposable (spamgourmet) address, I get a bounce message that tells me "remote host said 550 relay not permitted".

Here is the first half of the bounce message:
> From:
> "MAILER-DAEMON@yahoo.com" <MAILER-DAEMON@yahoo.com>
> Sorry, we were unable to deliver your message to the following address.
> <test2.20.m11@darkstone.com>:

I'm thinking that perhaps I did something wrong with the A record or MX record programming.

Thanks. Please let me know if I need to post more information.

Please Help!!

Well, I cannot make it work. I tweaked the MX records, and no longer get a bounce message (as described above). But still, none of the addresses I create when using the darkstone.com domain ever appear in my SG address list. Nor do any of the test messages make it to my protected address inbox.

On the other hand, all of the messages sent using the spamgourmet.com domain, work well.

I am stuck at this point. Any advice or recommendations would be very welcome.

THANK YOU!!!!!

So...to anyone who happens to read this thread...

Once all of the details are worked-out, it works perfectly.

I am now able to use an idle domain name for disposable email addresses via SpamGourmet.

The format (for a new email address) is the same as for a traditional SG address.

someword.count.username.domain.tld

An example would be:

testmessage.10.(my_u_n).darkstone.com

where "my_u_n" = my unique username registered with SG.

Thanks to all who helped or gave advice. Happy Wednesday to you.
