Gmail sending my SG emails to the Spam folder

Postby pogue972 » Thu May 23, 2013 4:57 am

After the hacks at Evernote, LivingSocial, and all the rest, I've resolved to start signing up for all my emails that go to my main Gmail account via SG. But, the problem is that Gmail is filtering a lot of these emails as spam and sticking them directly to the spam folder, which I don't check on a regular basis.

Currently, I have the following settings:

  • watchword enforcement: disabled
  • reply address masking: enabled
  • eaten message log: enabled
  • don't log for hidden addresses: disabled
  • hide subject tagline: disabled
  • hide tagline for trusted/exclusive only: disabled

Here's a sample headers of an email I just received that went into the spam box. I've replaced personal/compromising data with the letter X.

This is not an isolated incident. For whatever reason, this and many other emails from SG that originate from 0sg.net get caught in Gmail's Spam Filters

So, I'm wondering if there is any filter within Gmail that will move emails from SG to my Inbox. The subject line (prefix: message Y of Z) might be promising but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Incidentally, Yahoo mail doesn't have this problem at all.

Thanks very much in advance for the help,
pogue

You can join the existing discussion here:

Meanwhile, keep choosing the "not spam" flag for messages that aren't spam.
I've started checking my spam folder regularly to do that.

Here's what I have setup in my gmail filters to not send to spam:

Matches: (subject:("of 7") OR subject:("of 14") OR subject:(trusted))
Do this: Never send it to Spam

Works pretty good if you only ever do 7, or 14 messages total, since the email always says like "3 of 14". The exception would be trusted messages, which is also covered. If you have other numbers you prefer, you can put them in.

For some reason, gmail does NOT pick up all the emails in the filter if you put in the domain's that the email is TO (such as dfgh.net), the method suggested in the linked thread. In fact, if you search for the spam folder, it won't display all the hits if you search for dfgh.net
Dunno why, some bug in the google search algorithm perhaps. Anyway that's what I tried first and it didn't always work. The method to search for "of 14" etc is the only one I've found that works 100% of the time (at catching real emails anyway).

Gmail enjoys telling me how many of my messages that it "didn't send to spam because of a filter you created" and everytime it says that at the top of an email I'm thankful I have this filter in place since its not a spam message.

In regards to performance, Its pretty rare to get a spam sent to my inbox with this filter, not many emails specifically say something like "of 14" in the subject line. The "trusted" part sends a few spam on, but not that many (I think I had like 4 spam from that out of the 3000 spam in my spam folder sent to my inbox mistakenly). More importantly, it seems to catch all real emails and stops gmail from sending them to spam.

Gilla,
I wonder if what causes your filter using your spamgourmet domain in the To field to not work is the order in which it appears among your other filters. When I first created my "Never send to spam filter," the new filter was last in line to process and I seem to recall I had some inconsistent results is it would get picked up by other filters before my spam filter got a chance to work. In my experience, I have found that filters are processed from bottom to top. So the best thing to try, since Google doesn't give us a real way of ordering our filters,is to edit your "Never send to spam" filter. Don't actually change anything, but step all the way through and click on Update Filter. This will force that filter to the bottom of the list where it should apply first before any other filters.

Hopefully that helps,
Scott
