Unknown person is sending messages using my spamgourmet!

Postby calin79 » Sun Mar 13, 2011 1:56 am

I recently received a bounced email notification, saying that the email I had sent FROM one of my spamgourmet aliases had not been delivered successfully.

The only problem is, I never sent the email it was notifying me about. =/

Someone has somehow been able to send an email to others, using one of MY aliases.

Is this possible if they don't have my login information? Or does this mean that somebody has successfully hacked my account?

It just means that certain someone used a server that allows faking addresses (i.e. a "fake mail" form or a paid SMTP server).

Yes, it is a well-known technique used by spammers. They fake the "From:" address of the emails that they send, so all messages back, including automatic notifications on non-delivery get sent to someone other than themselves.

The point is that all they want you to do is read the email that they send, and click on the web-address or addresses in the email: they DO NOT want email back.

The technique is also known as doing a Joe-job - see the Wikipedia entry:
