Delays in receiving email

The mail I receive through my Spamgourmet disposable addresses is often significantly delayed. Some messages take 15 minutes, some 2 hours, some even 5 hours to go through. The messages are not long and do not have attachments. What is the problem? Some email I receive is time-sensitive, and I cannot wait this long for email to come through.

Also, sometimes I experience the reverse: email I send out through Spamgourmet is delayed for quite a while.

Is this only a temporary problem, or how can this be taken care of?
