Critical jobhunting address failing

Postby Lancer » Thu Apr 10, 2008 6:39 pm

I'm in a bit of a panic at the moment.

I've used SpamGourmet for several years now. I'm used to the system where I can make up addresses on the spot.

I've just finished a year long course in 3D animation. It cost me around $10,000 in course fees plus at least that again in living expenses... today we have our work exhibited and will then be on our own seeking work as animators.

The school supports us by sending our reels (demo videos of our work) to prospective employers who may contact us.

I put a spamgourmet address (xoxy.net) on my reel as contact details.

I thought I'd send something to the address (so that I could go in and reset the messages to 20).

I'm not getting anything.

Help!

Unfortunately that's life. You should use some other email address.

AFAIK, xoxy.net hasn't been working for a while.

I lost most of my penpals because spamgourmet failed.

Is there any official word on xoxy.net? I noticed it's still listed in the section to create addresses to send from. I don't really use it that much myself, but my Mom does, so I'd like to know if I need to tell her to switch. :)

Well - the address did work in the end... just major delay in creating the account.

I would love a fix to xoxy.net because...

1. It's the coolest so pretty much the one I use all the time
2. It's "too late now" to suddenly be not working - I have potential employers all over the country (and beyond) getting my CV with that address and these industry jobs are very hard sought after. Slack response will lose the job before the interview.

Critical jobhunting address failing

Syskoll, Josh, ...

Is the comment about "xoxy is dead" accurate or merely
a spreading myth??

i.e.: is that SG "alias"/domain
-- being 'hit' specifically and extensively ??
-- being 'hit' more severely than other options ??
-- just one among many of the SG domain casualities
in the assault against this service ??

I agree with, and echo, the comment about it being late
in the day for users to do anything much about it ... what
with having some/many email msgs "out there" using a
return address based on 'xoxy' ... but it'd sure be nice to
get some hint as to whether this choice among the
options offered is being particularly badly impacted.

I only know that xoxy.net hasnt been working properly for a LONG time. I mean years. Not days or weeks.

I also loved that domain, but I stopped using it because it didn't clearly work well. Unfortunately that same problem haunts whole spamgourmet.com service. As I described earlier.

Details here:
http://bbs.spamgourmet.com/viewtopic.php?p=5340#5340

And IMHO it's very serious. I don't like using unreliable email service.

I _assume_ your meaning in saying "not working properly" is
that thruput can be sporadic, and with various length delays.

If so, I agree that is a problem at times ... and alas, one
that's not gonna get solved until the DDos attacks cease
or a sound, long-term way to defuse them is found.

But, "not working for a long time ... years" is flat out not
consistent with _my_ experience with 'xoxy.net'

Of late -- lets say, the last 15-20 DAYS -- I'm getting delays
in receiving msgs destined for 'xoxy', and some senders are
even reporting that they are getting "delivery delayed"
warning messages (especially "mail transaction failed during
initialization" when the msg is inbound to SG's mail handlers).

But, .... Other than that, 'xoxy.net' has generally
worked quite reasonably well for me for the year
or three I've had user-ids defined that I publish
with that suffix/domain.

Except lately, whenever I've experienced there is a slow
down with 'xoxy' it has been also the case no matter
which of the alternative names is used (spamgourmet.net/org,
antichef.com/net, neverbox.com, recursor.net, ...) -- that
is, all of SG is getting schmucked.

If, for some reason I cannot see/understand 'xoxy' is
now NFG but other SG domains are Ok, I'd sure like
to know about it!!

** Plz say more about EXACTLY why YOU are contending
that 'xoxy' _in_particular_ is broken or not working

Thanx

If email is not delivered in 15 minutes, I say that address / service clearly isn't working. If email is not delivered in 4 hours, it might be lost.

Many mail servers doesn't try to deliver email for 14 or 7 days as they did in "good old days". The mail server on ISP I'm using sents notification that mail is still undelivered just in 15 minutes and after 4 hours it discards (bounces) mail because it can't be delivered.

Guess what... This is happening a lot with spamgourmet.com and especially with xoxy.net addresses.

To summ it up: this service is not working. Unfortunately. I have been using spamgourmet since 2003. But in last two years I have been ignoring this service due serious service quality problems. As I have been describing in several threads.

Right now:
Code: Select all
gourmet7.spamgourmet.com[216.75.35.134]: Connection refused

Your message could not be delivered for more than 15 minutes.
It will be retried until it is 8 hours old.

xoxy.net is essentially the same as spamgourmet.com - same hardware/software/configuration. I use it primarily, and I've been getting all my mail (and there's no priority of service logic or anything like that). Any perceived difference between those domains is due to random differences in the timing of testing/measurement.

We had been overwhelmed by botnet attacks, and eventually configured our way out of it. Additionally, whenever there's a big botnet push generally (not specifically aimed at us) we take a hit because we're handling over three million email addresses with not much hardware - we've been able to configure our way around that recently, too.

But, as with anything like this, it's a back and forth pitched battle -- chances are we will run into service problems again if/when the bots change their methods, and when that happens, we'll work again to get around the problem.
