Subject tagline: sometimes inserted in the middle

Postby tousavelo » Thu Apr 03, 2008 8:31 pm

Hello,

The Subject of some of my mails forwarded by spamgourmet have the tagline somewhere in the middle. However, it should be appended at the end.

The large majority of those Subjects have non-ASCII characters. BTW: I really do hope that this forum will process non-ASCII characters and "carriage return" properly. Otherwise, the text of my description will not make much sense for you... :-(
I feel that those Subjects may also have a "carriage return" or something inside.

See a few example bellow which display poorly, in Thunderbird and on gmail.google.com

**********************************
Subject: Newsletter 8 : les =?ISO-8859-1?Q?gr=E8ves=2C_et_le_myst=E8?= (arretsurimages: newsletter-noreply@arretsurimages.eu exclusive)
=?ISO-8859-1?Q?re_du_salaire_de_Sarkozy?=

Subject: =?windows-1252?q?Ethias_Projet_Test_=27carte_d=27identit=E9_=E9l?= (ethias: eid@ethias.be exclusive)
=?windows-1252?q?ectronique=27?=

=?iso-8859-1?B?ICEgROljb3V2cmV6LWxlIHZpdGUgIQ==?=

Subject: Ogone: Confirmation de votre commande =?ISO-8859-1?Q?aupr=E8s?= de (ogone: message 1 of 20)
CMInternational ASBL
**********************************

Notice that some Subjects with non ASCII characters are just fine.

Subject: Tentez votre chance pour 5 ans d'?lectricit? verte gratuite! (nuon: message 1 of 20)

Any improvement would be appreciated.
Best regards and thank you for spamgourmet

Cheers
Olivier

PS: I have noticed another weakness but apparently that problem has been reported before: "double tagline", see bellow:

Bonjour Olivier,

I think that the code that parses the subject is a bit simplistic indeed. We
need to look over it.

Hello,

Here is a few recent examples of unexpected Subjects. First, copy-pasted from the regular display in Gmail :

Code: Select all
accented in sibject éàùö (1---5----1----5----2: message 5 of 20)
accented éèàùöï to 1---5----1----5 (1---5----1----5----2: message 9 of 20)
No accented in subject, but display as (1---5----1----5----2: message 4 of 20)
accented in sibject éàùö padddddddddding (1---5----1----5----2: message 7 of 20)
accented in sibject éàùö padddddddddddddddding (1---5----1----5----2: message 6 of 20)
from outlook to 50 chars + .xxxxxx@antichef.com (1---5----1----5----2: message 1 of 20)
1---5----1----5----2.xxxxxx@antichef.com from outlook (1---5----1----5----2: message 2 of 20)

accented éèàùöï to 1---5----1 (1---5----1----5----2: message 3 of 20) ----5----2.xxxxxx@antichef.com
accented in sibject éàùö paddddddd (1---5----1----5----2: message 8 of 20) dddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddding

no accented in sibject paddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddding (1---5----1----5----2: message 10 of 20)

Notice two Subjects where the "suffix" is inserted near the middle.
For "message 3 of 20", there are 30 characters before and 31 after the "suffix".
For "message 8 of 20", there are 35 characters before and 36 after the "suffix".
Those Subjects have accented characters. Other shorter subjects with the same accented characters are as expected. Other long Subjects with no accented characters are as expected (message 10 of 20).

As received, with Google/Show Original, for "message 3 of 20" with the unexpected suffix, I get:
Code: Select all
Subject: =?UTF-8?B?UmU6IGFjY2VudGVkIMOpw6jDoMO5w7bDryB0byAxLS0tNS0tLS0xICgxLS0tNS0tLS0xLQ==?=
   =?UTF-8?B?LS0tNS0tLS0yOiBtZXNzYWdlIDMgb2YgMjApIC0tLS01LS0tLTIubmwyNDEyQGFudGljaGVmLmNvbQ==?=

As received, with Google/Show Original, for "message 8 of 20" with the unexpected suffix, I get:
Code: Select all
Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?accented_in_sibject_=E9=E0=F9=F6_paddddddd?= (1---5----1----5----2: message 8 of 20)
 =?iso-8859-1?Q?dddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddding?=

Note that I'm getting this text from Firefox and I don't know how encoding is setup in the browser. Message 8 looks OK, except for the suffix in the middle. Message 3 looks pretty strange indeed. If you like, I may get to the source from Thunderbird, which may be less sensitive to configuration issues.

With Google/Show Original for "message 10 of 20", I get
Code: Select all
Subject: no accented in sibject paddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddding (1---5----1----5----2: message 10 of 20)

So, I understand that long subjects with accented characters get split over multiple line, and the suffix is appended at the end of the first line.

As such, this is not a big deal for me. I only investigated it with an eye on our other open topic with the unexpected adress with "Reply adress masking".

Best regards
O.

Hello,

Actually, even for subjects without accented characters, you may get the subject in the middle if the Subject is long enough:

As displayed in main gmail window:
no accented in sibject paddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddding (1---5----1----5----2: message 11 of 20) no accented in sibject paddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddding

From Gmail/Show original:
Subject: no accented in sibject paddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddding (1---5----1----5----2: message 11 of 20)
no accented in sibject paddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddding

Cheers
O.
