As far as I can tell, it must have been a transient problem, because I can connect to the SMTP server.

You can connect but do you receive a replya after issuing
a HELO/EHLO?

I still have not received an expected email (several hours)
and I still have a test message in my local queue at
14:00 EDT (-0500) 2007-10-22.

Yes, I received a reply to my HELO within a second.

Can you please PM me the IP address of your SMTP client? I want to verify we aren't blacklisting it.

Also, in the same PM, give me the MSGS FROM and RCPT TO fields of your test SMTP sessions.
