New account creation messages

Postby SysKoll » Tue Jan 27, 2004 4:04 pm

I'll use the nice monospace formatting of the Code tag to simulate the dialog boxes.

On http://spamgourmet.com/index2.pl?languageCode=ZZ, the user sees:

Code: Select all
or create an account
newuser [________]
email   [________]
        [Go]

I'd prefer something slightly more explicit:
Code: Select all
or create an account
pick a new user name [________]
your email           [________]
     [Register]

Then, on the next page (http://spamgourmet.com/index2.pl, where the captcha is shown), the message "You are not logged in" is confusing. Remove it.

The text "please type the word in the image here" is fine.

Also, instead of
Code: Select all
newpass [________]
confirm [________]
        [Go]

I'd prefer
Code: Select all
Pick a password and enter it twice:
newpass [________]
confirm [________]
        [Create user]

This is only an opinion, feel free to contradict me.

that's good - better than what I was thinking, I think. It'll mean some new dialogs.

The brevity of the first two "newuser" and "email" is for formatting -- that is, to keep the width of the left hand column smaller. We could widen it, though.

We can keep these string and the formatting by just adding an explanatory line:
Code: Select all
or create an account
newuser [________]
email   [________]
        [Go]

becomes
Code: Select all
Pick a new user name
Enter you real email
newuser [________]
email   [________]
        [Register]

OK - I made most of Syskoll's changes (you can check at

http://spamgourmet.com/index2.pl?languageCode=ZZ

but not to the first login form yet. I'll get to that later.

if there are no objections, I'll probably go live with the change this evening.

Good job

Postby SysKoll » Tue Jan 27, 2004 9:12 pm

Good. Please also consider doing the other modifications, especially the one about the first page :
Code: Select all
Pick a new user name and
Enter you real email
newuser [________]
email   [________]
        [Register]

The "Go" button can stay, also technically, buttons on the same page that have different functions should have different labels.

Also, on the captcha page, please add a link to an item in the FAQ and add these paragraphs to the FAQ at the linked location:

Q: When I register a new user, your web site wants me to read a word in an image. Are you just trying to be sadistic?

A: We reserve our sadism for spammers. As of January 2004, we require every user to be human. That rules out spammers. Not because they are subhumans, but because they generally use scripts to register multiple IDs on web sites. Scripts can't do the word-in-an-image reading. Human beings, on another hand, should have no trouble.

Q: I am human but I am vision-impaired. I cannot see the darn word in the image. Help!

A: Contact us and we'll open an account for you. Email us to [[Insert scrambled info at sg.com address here]]

ok - it's live [duck and run]

I babelfished the dialogs for most of the languages, but there are some that even babelfish won't do...

Syskoll -- the french is likely bad... imagewordmismatch, and typeimageword

I'll probably wait until we have send-the-first-message up (with its concomitant dialogs) before I bug the other translators.

It's not too bad

Postby SysKoll » Wed Jan 28, 2004 4:15 pm

It's not that bad. The really sticky point here is that we have to change the English explanation dialogs in the no-brainer mode panel and warn the translators they need to propagate the changes. I'll work on a new English paragraph today and get back to you. Unless you want to authorize me to edit the English dialiogs
